Our bike advocacy partner in Chicago is Working Bikes, a non-profit that rescues discarded bicycles and gives them new life by redistributing them as tools of empowerment in local and global communities. By diverting bikes from landfills and providing them to those in need, Working Bikes hopes to build more sustainable, mobile, and healthy communities locally and globally.
They have redistributed more than 45,000 used bicycles to underserved communities in Chicago, Latin America, and Africa since 1999.
This summer, Working Bikes will host youth apprentices at their shop and run a bike mechanic program for adults in transitional housing with Streetwise and the Chicago Help Initiative. Both programs aim to develop participants’ job skills in general as well as their bike mechanic skills in particular, strengthening their community by strengthening the mobility and employability of its residents.
All proceeds from beer sales at our July 25 CHI bike reveal party will benefit Working Bikes, so arrive thirsty!
