ABOUT THE TEAM

The Art Institute of Portland LOVEs bikes! Located in the Pearl District in downtown Portland, most of the students and faculty rely on alternative modes of transportation, from bikes and skateboards to rides on the MAX light rail system. They’re all about taking care of business, bringing projects, models and materials from point A to point B on whatever type of wheels they can find. The team is excited to apply their talents to the design of their dream utility bike.

Launched in 2006, the school’s Industrial Design program was created as a center of curiosity and innovation. Courses are designed to explore the role of design within a range of human activities and interactions. With a 5,000-square-foot shop, students are immersed in researching, prototyping and testing ideas. Leading the student team is Industrial Department Director Jamie Hurd, faculty member Michael Downes and Mike DeSalvo of DeSalvo Custom Cycles.
